Villas and Gardens on Lake Como
The beautiful Villa Balbianello, built by Cardinal Durini in 1700 and now owned by the FAI (Italian Fund for the Environment), is located on the promontory of Lenno, one of the most picturesque corners of the lake. The beautiful panoramic loggia overlooks the town of Bellagio and Comacina Island. On the top floor of the villa there is a peculiar museum with art collections and travel memories of the last owner, the explorer Guido Monzino, a man of great culture fond of expeditions. It was him who left the villa to the FAI in his bequest.
The garden is characterized by terraces and balustrades, and it follows faithfully the evolution of the soil, with steep craggy rocks in some places and more gentle and sloping in other ones.
