Despite the passing of time, the small village of Vezio, perched above Varenna, has managed to retain its old features especially in the architecture of its stone houses. Its castle, destroyed as a result of different wars, is surrounded by thick walls showing medieval features.
The Castle of Vezio is currently a center of breeding, care and training of birds of prey that are exposed every day in the garden of the castle, excepted in lack of the falconer, from 10am to 4pm. Exhibitions and performances are always carried out taking into account the weather conditions and health of the birds. Although the Castle is a private property, it is open to the public throughout the year, usually from April to late October daily from 10 to sunset and only on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to sunset in winter.
Through a stone staircase over a drawbridge you can reach the summit of the tower, from where the 360° view of Lake Como is really amazing.
